Hyundai Motor Company Australia (HMCA) has successfully completed Australia’s first Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) discharge using the internationally recognised ISO 15118-20 communication standard. The milestone was achieved using the Hyundai IONIQ 9 electric SUV paired with the StarCharge Halo 7.4kW bidirectional DC charger.

The achievement represents a significant step forward for Australia’s emerging V2G ecosystem, demonstrating how electric vehicles can not only transport passengers but also return electricity to homes and the broader energy grid.

What is ISO 15118-20?

Hyundai V2G Australia

ISO 15118-20 is the latest global standard governing communication between electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. It enables secure and interoperable bidirectional energy transfer, allowing EVs to support applications such as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X).

By successfully completing a V2G discharge using this protocol, Hyundai has demonstrated that manufacturer-approved, standards-compliant V2G technology is becoming a practical reality in Australia.

Hyundai IONIQ 9 leads the way

The Hyundai IONIQ 9 is built on Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), featuring an 800-volt electrical architecture designed to support ultra-fast charging and bidirectional energy flow.

According to Hyundai Australia, the successful discharge validates ongoing local software development and certification efforts required to bring V2G functionality to Australian customers.

The StarCharge Halo charger used in the demonstration received Clean Energy Council (CEC) approval in March 2026 and complies with AS/NZS 4777.2 standards, ensuring compatibility with Australian energy regulations.

Hyundai says the milestone lays the foundation for future residential V2G trials and broader deployment of vehicle-powered energy solutions across homes, businesses, energy networks and virtual power plants.

HMCA Chief Executive Officer Don Romano said the achievement was the result of extensive technical collaboration between Hyundai’s Australian and Korean research and development teams.

He noted that electric vehicles have the potential to do much more than provide transportation, highlighting their ability to support household energy needs and contribute to grid stability.

More Hyundai EVs could gain V2G capability

Hyundai Australia confirmed that several models are currently being evaluated or developed for future V2G functionality, including:

  • Hyundai IONIQ 9
  • Hyundai IONIQ 5
  • Hyundai IONIQ 6
  • Future IONIQ electric vehicle platforms

Globally, Hyundai Motor Group is already advancing V2X technologies through customer-focused V2G pilot programs in South Korea, commercial V2G services across Europe and Vehicle-to-Home services in the United States.

Australia’s growing V2G opportunity

Australia formally adopted national V2G and V2H standards in 2024, creating a regulatory framework for bidirectional charging technologies.

According to forecasts from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), as many as 2.6 million Australian homes could adopt V2G technology by 2040.

With EV adoption continuing to grow, Hyundai’s latest achievement could help accelerate the rollout of standards-based, manufacturer-supported vehicle-to-grid solutions across Australia.
