Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has unveiled two new NEV SUV concepts at Auto China 2026. The company used the global stage to signal a faster electrification push. It also reinforced China’s role in its long term global strategy.

Nissan confirmed that both concepts preview upcoming production models. It plans to reveal the final versions within one year. While Nissan has not confirmed an Australian launch, the Terrano PHEV and Urban SUV could suit Australia’s rising demand for electrified SUVs, especially in the midsize segment.

Urban SUV PHEV Concept focuses on city buyers

The Urban SUV PHEV Concept targets younger customers in China’s urban centres. Nissan designed it for daily commuting and connected lifestyles.

The concept uses plug in hybrid technology. It aims to balance efficiency and performance in city conditions. The design draws cues from the NX8 and Nissan’s future SUV lineup. It features a modern and clean look with a focus on practicality.

Nissan positions this model as an accessible electrified SUV. It wants to attract first time NEV buyers who still value flexibility.

Terrano PHEV Concept revives an iconic nameplate

The Terrano PHEV Concept marks the return of a well known SUV badge. Nissan combines its off road heritage with new electrified powertrains.

The concept uses plug in hybrid technology to support both long drives and daily use. Nissan says it built the SUV for dual purpose roles. It can handle urban roads and outdoor terrain.

This approach allows Nissan to retain its SUV identity. At the same time, it aligns with stricter emissions norms and changing buyer preferences.

Production timeline and expanding NEV lineup

Nissan will bring both concepts into production within one year. The company has also confirmed three additional NEV launches in China by fiscal year 2027.

This forms part of a broader rollout strategy. Nissan has already introduced models such as the N7, Frontier Pro PHEV, N6, and NX8. These vehicles reflect a shift toward electrified mobility across segments.

The company combines global engineering standards with rapid local development. It refers to this approach as blending global quality with China speed.

China plays a dual role in Nissan’s global vision

Nissan has introduced a new vision called Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life. It places China at the centre of its execution.

The company assigns China two clear roles. It serves as a strong domestic market. It also acts as a global innovation and export hub.

Nissan develops advanced technologies in China. It then scales them for global markets. This strategy allows faster product cycles and competitive pricing.

Ivan Espinosa, President and CEO, said China drives both competition and innovation. He stated that technology must deliver clear value and improve everyday mobility.

Export plans expand China’s global influence

Nissan will export several China developed models to international markets. The N7 will reach Latin America and ASEAN regions. The Frontier Pro PHEV will expand to Latin America, ASEAN, and the Middle East.

The company also plans to export the NX8 and the future production version of the Terrano PHEV Concept. This shows a shift in Nissan’s global supply chain strategy. China will not only serve local demand but also support international growth.

Sales targets and long term outlook

Nissan aims to achieve one million annual vehicle sales in China by fiscal year 2030. It will rely on both domestic demand and exports to reach this target. The two concept SUVs highlight a clear direction. Nissan is accelerating its NEV transition in the world’s largest car market. It is also using China as a base for innovation and exports.

The Urban SUV PHEV and Terrano PHEV concepts offer an early look at what comes next. They combine electrification, usability, and brand heritage. Nissan now needs to deliver strong production versions to stay competitive in China’s fast moving NEV space.
