Skoda is expanding the global reach of the Superb with a diesel-powered version set to return to India in 2027, raising the possibility of the powertrain being offered in Australia.

The latest Superb is already sold in Australia, but the local range currently misses out on the diesel engine available in other global markets.

With India now set to receive the diesel-powered flagship as a completely built unit (CBU), the powertrain remains available for Skoda to offer in right-hand-drive markets such as Australia.

There is no confirmation from Skoda Australia that a diesel Superb is planned, but its availability in another global market provides a potential pathway for the powertrain to be considered locally.

Why would a diesel Super make sense in Australia?

Skoda Superb Diesel

A diesel-powered Skoda Superb could be particularly well suited to Australian driving conditions. The large sedan is designed for long-distance touring, with a spacious cabin, large boot and strong highway credentials. A diesel engine would add high-speed cruising efficiency and strong low-end torque, making it appealing to buyers who regularly travel long distances.

The diesel engine could also provide an alternative for Australian buyers who want the practicality and comfort of a large European sedan without moving to an SUV. The latest Superb’s 2.0-litre TDI diesel produces up to 110 kW-140 kW and 400Nm. It is available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive in some specifications.

Those characteristics could suit Australian buyers who spend significant time on motorways and regional roads, where the combination of strong torque and long-distance fuel efficiency can be particularly useful.

The Superb is already sold in Australia

The current-generation Superb is already part of the Australian line-up, including the Superb Wagon. The local range also includes a plug-in hybrid version, giving Skoda an established presence in the large-car segment.

A diesel variant could therefore broaden the Superb range rather than create an entirely new model. It could also give the Superb a stronger point of difference against the growing number of SUVs competing for Australian buyers who want a comfortable long-distance vehicle.

Could Australia get the diesel Skoda Superb?

Skoda Superb Diesel

For now, a diesel Superb remains a possibility rather than a confirmed Australian model. But the timing could make the idea interesting. The Superb is already established in Australia, and the availability of a diesel powertrain in another global market gives Skoda the option to expand its local range if it sees sufficient demand.

For Australian buyers who regularly cover long distances, a diesel Superb could offer a combination of strong torque, highway efficiency and long-range touring ability that would make it a compelling alternative to a large SUV.

Skoda has not announced plans for a diesel Superb in Australia, but the Indian expansion gives Australian buyers a reason to keep an eye on the flagship sedan.
