Suzuki Jimny XL stop-sale for Australia now lifted

Suzuki Australia has resumed sales of the Jimny XL after a six-week national stop-sale was lifted, with deliveries to customers restarting immediately. The suspension, which began in mid-July, followed an investigation by Suzuki Motor Corporation in Japan.

The stop-sale began in July

The stop-sale was introduced in mid-July while Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) in Japan conducted an investigation into the Jimny XL. Dealers were instructed to halt both retail and wholesale sales until the inquiry was completed.

Only the five-door Jimny XL, which is manufactured in India, was affected. The Japanese-built three-door Jimny remained unaffected by this suspension.

No issues found

SMC has since confirmed there are no concerns regarding the Jimny XL’s quality, safety, performance or compliance, clearing the way for sales and deliveries to resume.

Michael Pachota, Suzuki Australia’s managing director, told media that SMC had not disclosed the exact nature of its internal checks but confirmed that “Our customers’ well-established trust in Suzuki is built on the promise that quality and safety always come first.”

Customers offered refunds during pause

During the stop-sale, Suzuki Australia and its independent distributor, Suzuki Queensland, offered customers the option to cancel their orders and receive full refunds. Despite the disruption, Suzuki reports that only a small number of customers took up this option. Most chose to wait, particularly those with aftermarket accessories on order.

Stock is ready to go

Although customer deliveries were on hold, shipments of the Suzuki Jimny XL continued arriving in Australia. Dealers have now been informed that stock held at ports and yards can be released immediately, allowing vehicles to be made available for prompt delivery.

Jimny demand remains strong

The Jimny is Suzuki’s best-selling model in Australia. Sales so far in 2025 are more than double those of the next most popular model in the range, the Swift hatchback.

The impact of the July–August stop-sale is expected to be reflected in national sales data, which will be published next week.

Three-door Jimny faces a separate compliance issue

While the three-door Jimny was not included in the stop-sale, it has faced its own supply challenge this year.

From 1 March 2025, new Australian Design Rules (ADR 98/00) came into effect, setting requirements for autonomous emergency braking (AEB). The three-door Jimny’s system did not comply with these new standards, preventing further imports.

Suzuki says stock imported and compliant before the March deadline remains available, with an updated, compliant three-door Jimny scheduled to launch in early 2026.
