Toyota Australia has announced a recall affecting 1,199 Toyota Tundra vehicles due to a wiring issue within the towing converter relay assembly. The recall applies to selected locally remanufactured Tundra vehicles produced between May 2023 and December 2024.
What’s the defect?
According to Toyota Australia, the affected vehicles are equipped with a towing converter relay used to control the vehicle and trailer rear lamps.
A wire within the relay may have insufficient insulation, leaving a terminal pin exposed through the insulation tape. If the exposed terminal pin comes into contact with the cabin back panel, it may create a short circuit.
This could cause the vehicle’s stop lights to become inoperative and trigger a brake override warning message.
Why is it a safety concern?

If the stop lights fail to operate, other road users may not be aware when the vehicle is braking.
Toyota also states that if the condition occurs, the vehicle may not restart after being switched off because the smart start system requires a stop signal to operate.
The combination of inoperative brake lights and a vehicle that cannot be restarted could increase the risk of a crash, potentially resulting in serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.
Which vehicles are affected?
Make: Toyota
Model affected: Toyota Tundra
Production dates: 1 May 2023 to 19 December 2024

What should owners do now?

Toyota is asking affected owners to contact their preferred Toyota dealer to arrange an inspection and repair.
Dealers will rectify the issue by reworking the terminal pin and re-insulating the wire to the main wire harness, free of charge.
The repair is expected to take approximately one hour, although vehicles may need to remain at the dealership for longer depending on workshop schedules.
