Key highlights

  • The ID.4 Pro now has an 84kWh battery and a claimed WLTP driving range of 546km.
  • Both Australian variants gain additional driver assistance technology, built-in satellite navigation and physical steering wheel buttons.
  • Volkswagen has increased list prices by $1000, with drive-away offers starting at $65,990 until 31 December 2026.

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV has received another update for the 2027 model year in Australia, bringing a larger battery to the entry-level Pro, revised cabin technology and additional driver assistance features. However, buyers will pay $1000 more for either variant at standard list prices. The update arrives even though Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID.4 will eventually be replaced by the upcoming ID. Tiguan, alongside the related ID.5. The replacement is scheduled to be revealed on 9 October 2026, although its Australian launch timing has not yet been announced.

For now, the updated ID.4 remains part of Volkswagen Australia’s electric vehicle range, competing with alternatives such as the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7 and Zeekr 7X. The 2027 ID.4 Pro is priced at $60,990 before on-road costs, while the all-wheel drive GTX starts at $70,990. Volkswagen Australia is advertising drive-away prices of $65,990 and $75,990 respectively until 31 December 2026.

More range for the ID.4 Pro

The biggest mechanical change is to the rear-wheel drive ID.4 Pro, which now uses an 84kWh lithium-ion battery instead of the previous 82kWh unit. Volkswagen claims a driving range of 546km on the WLTP cycle, up by 2km. While that is a modest improvement, the larger battery gives buyers a little more range between charges without changing the vehicle’s existing power output.

The Pro retains its single electric motor producing 210kW and 545Nm, with a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.7 seconds. It is also 39kg lighter than before. The flagship ID.4 GTX continues with its 82kWh battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive system. Its claimed WLTP range increases by 11km to 522km, while outputs remain unchanged at 250kW and 679Nm. Volkswagen quotes a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds, with the updated model weighing 42kg less than its predecessor.

Both variants retain a maximum DC fast-charging rate of 175kW. This means the update does not bring a higher peak charging speed, although actual charging times will depend on factors including battery temperature, the charging station and the battery’s state of charge.

Physical buttons return to the cabin

The interior receives changes aimed at improving everyday usability. The ID.4 now features Volkswagen’s Innovision infotainment system, displayed on the existing 12.9-inch central touchscreen. Built-in satellite navigation is included, addressing a previous omission in the Australian Pro. Physical buttons have also returned to the three-spoke steering wheel, replacing the touch-sensitive controls that attracted criticism from customers. The change should make common functions easier to operate without requiring drivers to interact with flat touch controls while moving.

The updated navigation system also adds functionality to Volkswagen’s ID.Light, an LED strip at the base of the windscreen that provides visual information to the driver. With navigation active, it can display animated directional cues for upcoming turns. Another addition is the Atmospheres function, part of the Driving Experience Selection system. It lets occupants personalise the cabin environment through coordinated changes to ambient lighting and other comfort settings.

More driver assistance features across the range

The 2027 update adds traffic sign recognition, predictive speed limiting and front cross-traffic assist to both variants. Predictive speed limiting works alongside adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition to adjust the vehicle’s speed in response to changing speed limits. Drivers should still pay attention to posted signs and road conditions rather than relying solely on the system.

The Area View surround-view camera system has also been improved, with revised parking guidance and wheel protection functionality. Volkswagen’s Proactive Occupant Protection System remains standard, tightening the front seatbelts and closing open windows when the vehicle detects an imminent collision or another critical driving situation. These additions give the ID.4 more driver assistance equipment, although buyers should check the specification of their chosen vehicle before ordering.

ID.4 sales are growing ahead of its replacement

The ID.4 only arrived in Australian showrooms in July 2025, despite having been available in Europe since late 2020. The first Australian versions already incorporated a major update introduced overseas in 2023.

According to sales figures covering January to September 2026, Volkswagen sold 1360 ID.4s in Australia, up from 729 over the same period in 2025. That represents an increase of 86.6 per cent, making it the brand’s best-selling electric vehicle locally over that period, although the ID. Buzz outsold it in September.

The latest changes give Volkswagen a more competitive ID.4 to offer Australian buyers while the company prepares its replacement. However, the $1000 price increases and relatively small range improvements mean buyers will need to weigh the updated equipment against the alternatives available in Australia’s growing electric SUV market.
