used cars for sale in Sydney

No one purchases a convertible for necessity. It's the car after the practical car is sorted and ready for the weekend roads, coastal roads, and the joy of a car with a roof down on a good day. Unlike shopping for a sedan or SUV, it's a different ball game when it comes to shopping for a used convertible because the market is small, the selection is limited, and you need to know what's really available before you fall for a model that's not.

Why is searching for a perfect convertible complex?

Type "convertible" into most car searches and the results thin out fast, and that's not a fault in the search; it reflects the real market. Convertibles make up a tiny slice of car sales in Australia, and that scarcity carries straight through to the used market. Rather than browsing broadly and hoping something turns up, it's more useful to know the handful of models that actually circulate regularly, and go in with realistic expectations from the start.

Other cars for you

Mazda MX-5: Most common

For this category, if there is a default, it's the Mazda MX-5. It's the most reliable convertible you'll find on the used market, and the price for mid-2010s models is in the high 20s and low 30s. It's not about power or luxury, it's about being light, handling tightly and being driven through the corners and not the straight sections of the road. This is typically where people start when they consider the convertible option, but aren't prepared to spend hours and hours configuring the badge.

BMW Z4: The grand tourer

The BMW Z4 is even less common, but if comfort is more important than handling, you may want to know about it. It's bulkier and more stable at highway speeds than a light sports car, and is more of a grand tourer than a sports car. If you're after a blend of speed and comfort rather than outright handling, the Z4 is the one to cross-shop against the MX-5.

Budget Option: Holden Cascada

The lowest price to switch to convertible ownership in recent years is the Holden Cascada, which starts at $22,999 up to $70,990 for recently built cars. It's no longer in production, so parts availability and access to a mechanic experienced with the model should be considered before making the purchase. But for the budget conscious that want the real deal in a first convertible, it's the cheapest.

What about Toyota, Mercedes, MG or Audi?

It's better to be upfront about it than let the search go 'round and 'round. Toyota, MG and Audi don't make a convertible for Australia at the moment, so there will be no point in looking for any of these three badges in Australia.

Mercedes-Benz is a bit different; it does produce convertibles, such as the C-Class Cabriolet, and this is a real category, but these are rarely available in the used market.

What matters: the brand or the feeling?

This is likely to be a real fork in the road for most convertible buyers. Those looking for specific brand experiences will be disappointed at how few options there are. Patience and flexibility with timing will be more important than a general search. The decision of whether to go with the make will depend on budget and how the car drives, and someone chasing the feeling of a drop-top drive should probably start with the MX-5, Z4 or Cascada.

What to look for before buying a used convertible car?

The soft-top roof is the one that needs the most attention; look for any tears and see if there is any water staining in the cabin, as well as check that it rises and lowers smoothly without issue. Also, convertibles sit for longer periods of time than daily-driver cars, and tyre age and battery condition are far better checked than assumed, so low kilometres don't necessarily indicate they are in good condition. On models like the MX-5, it’s worth having a close look at the sills and rear wheel arches for rust.

Why not buy a convertible car?

A convertible gives up the boot space, rear-seat room and occasionally weather sealing of an equivalent hardtop. That's not a bug, it's a feature, in exchange for the driving experience. It's easier to use as a second car or a weekend car, before the real world deficiencies become apparent in everyday driving.
