The Jeep model began life in 1940 when the U.S. Army called for bids from 135 car-makers for a 1/4 ton “light reconnaissance vehicle” tailored to Army specifications. Only three companies responded — Bantam, Willys and Ford. They combined to produce the blueprint for the vehicle known worldwide as the ‘Jeep’. After a few iterations, Willys-Overland went on to produce the 4x4 vehicle that was sent into battle in many countries. Some later claimed the Jeep helped to win the war.
