Key highlights:
- BMW turns the X4 nameplate into an electric-only iX4 model
- iX4 50 xDrive claims an 828km WLTP range
- M60 xDrive flagship arrives in Australia later in 2027
The 2027 BMW iX4 has made its global debut ahead of its Australian arrival in the first quarter of 2027. BMW has turned the X4 nameplate into an electric-only model, with the new iX4 joining the Neue Klasse family as the coupe-style sibling to the iX3.
Australian buyers will initially get two variants, starting from $103,900 before on-road costs, and a high-performance M60 xDrive will join the range later in 2027.
Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron will be the iX4’s most direct rival locally, but the upcoming BMW mid-size coupe electric SUV could also compete with the Porsche Macan Electric, Polestar 4, and Tesla Model Y.

Two pure electric powertrains at launch
Both Australian iX4 variants use BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, dual electric motors and an 800V electrical system, and they also use more efficient electric motors and new cylindrical battery cells.
| Specification | iX4 40 xDrive | iX4 50 xDrive |
|---|---|---|
| Battery capacity | 82.6kWh net NMC | 108.7kWh net NMC |
| Combined output | 275kW / 520Nm | 345kW / 645Nm |
| Drivetrain | All-wheel drive | All-wheel drive |
| 0-100km/h | 5.6s | 4.9s |
| Top speed | 200km/h | 210km/h |
| Energy consumption (WLTP) | 15.9-19.1kWh/100km | 15.7-19.0kWh/100km |
| Range (WLTP) | 638km | 828km |
| DC fast charging | 300kW | 400kW |
| DC charge time | 10%-80% in 21 mins | 10%-80% in 21 mins |
| AC charging | 22kW | 22kW |
The iX4 50 xDrive large 108.7kWh net battery gives it a claimed 828km WLTP range, which improves on the BMW iX3 EV’s 805km figure.
Dimensions and cargo space
The iX4 is essentially a cut-roof twin to the iX3 EV, sharing an identical length, width, and footprint with it, but sits noticeably closer to the ground.
| Length | 4782mm |
| Width | 1895mm |
| Height | 1595mm (40mm less than iX3’s) |
| Wheelbase | 2897mm |
| Boot space | 490L (seats up); 1600L (seats folded); 58L (under bonnet) |
The rear headroom takes a slight hit compared to the boxier iX3, due to the more tapered roofline, but the boot still manages to offer a respectable 490 litres of cargo capacity with the rear seats up.

Australian launch timing and pricing
The first BMW iX4 variants will arrive in Australia during the first quarter of 2027, and the brand will add the high-performance M60 xDrive later in 2027.
| Variant | Price before on-road costs |
|---|---|
| 2027 BMW iX4 40 xDrive | $103,900 |
| 2027 BMW iX4 50 xDrive | $119,900 |
| 2027 BMW iX4 M60 xDrive | Arriving later in 2027 |
BMW has completely discontinued the traditional petrol and diesel X4 (G02), leaving the new iX4 as the sole model carrying the X4 name.
The iX4 uses BMW’s dedicated 800-volt electric architecture and shares its underlying Neue Klasse technology with the iX3 and takes a lower, coupe-inspired body shape than the iX3, helping improve aerodynamic efficiency and extend its claimed driving range.
BMW has skipped a rear-wheel-drive iX4 40 variant for Australia. The iX3 range includes a rear-wheel-drive version priced at $89,900, which sits below the Luxury Car Tax threshold.
Warranty and servicing
BMW Australia provides a five-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and the battery receives an eight-year or 160,000km warranty, while roadside assistance runs for three years.
BMW has not yet announced iX4 service pricing. The iX4 will use BMW’s condition-based servicing system rather than predetermined service intervals.
BMW may also offer pre-paid service plans. For reference, the related iX3 has a four-year Service Inclusive plan priced at $1614 and a six-year plan costing $2420.
BMW also offers Service Inclusive Plus plans. These cost $5535 for four years or $6615 for six years and cover wear items such as brake pads, brake discs and windscreen wipers.
