The Ford Fiesta could have another shot at the Australian market, with Ford Australia signalling it is open to sourcing more vehicles from Europe. The comments come as Ford Australia expands beyond its traditional global supply channels, with the Bronco Basecamp and Transit City set to join its local range as models sourced from China.
Ford Australia president and CEO Fadi Mawal said the company has an advantage in being able to source vehicles from different parts of the world, including the US, Europe, Thailand and China. That could potentially reopen the door for models such as the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus, which disappeared from the Australian market after Ford ended local sales of the hatchbacks. However, there is no confirmation that either model will return to Australia.

A future Fiesta would need to make financial sense
Mawal said Ford Australia is prepared to consider products from different markets if they have the right combination of technology, styling, features and price. That does not mean every global Ford model is automatically a candidate for Australia. The local operation still needs to establish a strong business case before committing to a vehicle. The previous Fiesta and Focus struggled to compete in Australia’s increasingly SUV-focused new-car market, while their pricing also made it difficult for Ford to compete against more affordable rivals.
Ford Australia is therefore looking for future models that can arrive at a price point where the brand has a realistic chance of competing for buyers. Mawal specifically pointed to the Fiesta and Focus as products that had previously been highly regarded, but said the difficulty was bringing them to Australia at an affordable price. “If there are products in the future like those, but we could bring them in and play to win, yes,” Mawal said.
The new Fiesta is expected to be electric
The potential return of the Ford Fiesta is particularly interesting because the nameplate is reportedly being revived as an electric car through Ford’s partnership with Renault. Details of the next-generation Fiesta remain limited, and an Australian version has not been confirmed.
If it does eventually come here, the new Fiesta would be very different from the small petrol hatchback previously sold in Australia. The outgoing European Fiesta was discontinued in 2023, with Ford instead concentrating on SUVs and commercial vehicles in several markets. A new electric Fiesta could give Ford another way into Australia’s growing small-car and EV segments, although local pricing, specifications and timing remain unknown.
Ford Australia wants more models
The Fiesta possibility forms part of a broader expansion strategy for Ford Australia. The company currently says its product range covers around 30 per cent of the Australian new-car market, with a goal of roughly doubling that coverage in the coming years. The Bronco Basecamp and Transit City are two examples of how Ford is widening its sourcing strategy. The Bronco Basecamp is coming from China, while the Transit City also expands Ford’s commercial-vehicle offering with a China-sourced model.
That approach gives Ford Australia access to products that are not necessarily developed specifically for this market, while allowing the local operation to assess models from a wider range of global programs. For Australian buyers, that could eventually mean a broader Ford showroom, including vehicles outside the brand’s current SUV, ute, van and performance-car focus. For now, though, the Ford Fiesta remains a possibility rather than a confirmed Australian model. Ford Australia has not announced local pricing, specifications or launch timing for a revived Fiesta.
