Genesis has climbed to second overall in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), marking its strongest performance in the annual survey after rising seven places from ninth in 2025. While the study measures the experiences of new-car owners in the United States, the results are relevant to Australian buyers because many of the same Genesis models, including the G70, G80, GV70 and GV80, are sold locally.
The annual study measures the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first 90 days of ownership, with a lower score indicating better initial quality. The 2026 edition was based on responses from 78,514 purchasers and lessees of new model-year vehicles.

Genesis G70, G80, GV70 and GV80 earn top-three finishes

Genesis recorded strong results across multiple vehicle segments. The G80 and GV80 each finished second in their respective categories, while the G70 sedan and GV70 SUV secured third place.
According to Genesis, the G80 played the biggest role in the brand’s overall improvement after recording fewer owner-reported issues than before. Most of the gains came in infotainment, vehicle controls, features and overall usability.
The GV70 also showed notable year-on-year improvements, with refinements to its infotainment interface and control systems contributing to a smoother ownership experience. Meanwhile, the GV80 improved across several quality categories, including infotainment, exterior quality, and features and controls.

What do the results mean for Genesis Australia?
Although the JD Power Initial Quality Study only surveys U.S. owners, it provides an indication of the quality improvements being made across Genesis’ global model range.
Australian buyers currently have access to much of the same lineup, including the G70, G80, GV70, GV80, GV60 and Electrified G80. Many of the technology and usability improvements highlighted in the study are expected to be reflected in vehicles sold locally.
Genesis continues to grow its presence in Australia’s premium vehicle market, where it competes with established luxury brands including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Lexus.

Genesis says customer feedback drove the improvements

“Genesis continues to push forward with a strong commitment to excellence in every aspect of the vehicle ownership experience,” said Tedros Mengiste, chief operating officer of Genesis Motor North America. “As we continue to expand our product offering, we are pleased to see SUVs and sedans across our lineup receiving top accolades in industry tests. This JD Power ranking further highlights our relentless pursuit of excellence in quality and reinforces the trust our customers place in the Genesis brand.”
Barry Ratzlaff, chief customer officer at Genesis Motor North America, said the result reflected the company’s continued focus on refining its vehicles. “Earning the No. 2 overall ranking in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study is a meaningful milestone for Genesis and reflects the entire organisation’s dedication to delivering vehicles of the highest standards,” he said.
“The continued momentum of GV70, GV80 and our sedan lineup highlights our ability to listen to customers, act quickly and continuously refine the experience.”
The latest ranking gives Genesis another quality credential as it continues to expand its presence in Australia’s premium vehicle market.
