Hyundai has confirmed the all-new 2027 Santa Fe EREV will become the group’s first global product to receive the new powertrain outside China and is expected to launch within H1 2027 in North America. The Australian arrival remains unconfirmed.
This extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) model will come with a claimed combined driving range of almost 1000km. The new powertrain will use two electric motors and a much smaller battery than a typical EV, while a petrol engine will generate electricity to extend its range.
The midsize, 3-row crossover SUV currently offers petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains globally depending on the market.

Santa Fe gets almost 1000km of range
Hyundai CEO and President José Muñoz confirmed the Santa Fe EREV at the company’s 2026 Investor Day conference.
The company said the SUV will travel approximately 966km without stopping to recharge or refuel. The company has not released full technical details yet, but it has confirmed the Santa Fe EREV will use dual electric motors and a battery less than half the size of a typical EV battery.
Hyundai had previously confirmed it was developing EREV technology, but the Santa Fe becomes the first model officially confirmed to use it.

How the EREV system works
An EREV works differently from a conventional plug-in hybrid. A PHEV can use its combustion engine to drive the wheels directly, but an EREV exclusively use the electric motors to drive the wheels while the petrol engine acts as a generator to charge the battery.
The system can help drivers travel much farther without relying entirely on charging infrastructure.
Prospects of Australian launch
Hyundai has confirmed the Santa Fe EREV for North America in the first half of 2027 but has not confirmed whether Australia will receive the new Santa Fe EREV powertrain.
A Hyundai Australia spokesperson has confirmed that EREV models will come to Australia, but did not provide a launch timeline or further details.
Hyundai Motor Group will also extend the EREV technology to its luxury Genesis brand and has confirmed a Genesis EREV flagship SUV with a claimed combined range of
1030km. The company has not released further details about this Genesis model.
The company also plans to launch an EREV version of the Ioniq 5 in China
