Suzuki is preparing to unveil an updated Baleno in India on September 5, with the premium hatchback set to receive revised styling and equipment upgrades.
The Suzuki Baleno has previously been sold in Australia across two distinct eras, from 1995 to 2001 and again from 2016 to 2022. While Suzuki has not confirmed plans to bring the updated Baleno back to Australia, its upcoming reveal could reignite speculation about a return for the nameplate.

New Suzuki Baleno gets an evolutionary makeover

The updated Baleno is expected to retain the current model’s overall shape, with test vehicles suggesting an evolutionary facelift rather than an all-new generation. The most noticeable changes are expected at the front, where the Baleno could receive a redesigned grille with a slim chrome strip extending towards the headlights.
The rear is expected to receive fewer changes, while new 16-inch alloy wheel designs could give the side profile a fresher appearance. Inside, the dashboard is expected to remain largely unchanged, with revisions likely limited to new upholstery and colour combinations.
Suzuki could also introduce additional equipment, although the full feature list will be confirmed closer to the September 5 unveiling.
The current Baleno in India is equipped with a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system, head-up display, climate control and a mixed analogue-digital instrument cluster. Suzuki could potentially upgrade the infotainment system to the larger 10.1-inch unit used in the Brezza.
Petrol and CNG engines expected in India
The updated Baleno is expected to retain its 1.2-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine in India. The engine currently produces around 65kW and 113Nm and is paired with either a five-speed manual or AMT automatic transmission.
A CNG version is also expected to continue, although it is offered with a manual transmission. There is also speculation that Suzuki could introduce its 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine to the Baleno. The engine is already available in the Fronx and has recently been introduced in an updated form in the Brezza.
However, Suzuki has yet to confirm whether the turbocharged engine will be offered in the updated Baleno.
Could the Suzuki Baleno return to Australia?
A return would give Suzuki another small-car offering in Australia, where the brand currently focuses heavily on models such as the Swift, Vitara and S-Cross.
However, there is no confirmation that the updated Baleno will be sold in Australia.
The Indian-market Baleno is also not necessarily a direct indication of what Suzuki could offer internationally. Australia has different safety and emissions requirements, while Suzuki’s local product strategy would also determine whether there is a business case for bringing the hatchback back.
For now, the September 5 reveal will provide a clearer look at Suzuki’s latest take on the Baleno and whether the nameplate has the potential for a broader international comeback.
