For a NSW-registered car, the person listed as the registered operator must lodge a Notice of Disposal as soon as the sale is complete. This tells Transport for NSW that you have sold the car and it also helps protect you from fines or driving offences recorded after the sale. The buyer generally has 14 days to transfer the rego. If you sell to a licensed NSW motor dealer, the notice requires the dealer’s licence number and registered business name.
You can lodge the notice online through MyServiceNSW if you have a NSW Driver Licence or Photo Card, the car is not conditionally registered, and the buyer is a person or licensed NSW motor dealer. You’ll also need the rego details, sale date and dealer information. If you cannot use the online service, submit a paper form which applies in cases involving conditional registration, certain company or organisation sales and interstate buyers.
Keep the Notice of Disposal receipt, signed agreement and proof of sale. Remove the car from your toll account and take out any toll tags or parking passes. Contact your comprehensive insurer. The CTP insurance transfers with the car. If you have personalised or special plates, decide whether to keep, swap or include them before handover.
