The VFACTS April 2026 car sales data for top-selling car models in Australia is released, and the biggest highlight is still (see March 2026 data) the accelerating electrification. Electric vehicles (EVs) made up around 16.4% of total sales, roughly 1 in every 6 new cars, and their supply is expanding, with around 110 models now available.

The growth of EVs, Hybrids, and PHEVs is being driven by the New Vehicle Efficiency Scheme (NVES), rising petrol prices and the Federal Government’s electric car discount. China continues to lead the way as the best-selling country of origin for cars Down Under.

  • Toyota RAV4 was sold the most in Australia in April (3,729), returning to the top spot after dropping out of the top 20 in March 2026 due to a model changeover. It continues to dominate thanks to its strong hybrid appeal.
  • Ford Ranger is still the Ute king and maintains its overall market lead year-to-date (YTD). It posted a strong April result with 3,431 4×4 sales alone. It continues to outperform its long-time rival: Toyota HiLux.
  • Chery Tiggo 4 (Pro) is now the best-selling small SUV in Australia, overtaking the Hyundai Kona. Chery Tiggo 4 YTD sales: 9,186 sales; Hyundai Kona: 8,336 sales
  • Toyota Prado outsold the Ford Everest in April 2026 in the large SUV category. However, Everest still leads year-to-date (7081 vs 6385).
  • Tesla Model Y missed the top 20 with only 822 deliveries in April 2025. BYD Sealion 7 dominated instead, with 1,780 deliveries, more than double the Model Y.
  • Toyota has 3 models in the top 20 best-selling cars. BYD, Ford, GWM, Hyundai, Isuzu Ute, and Mitsubishi each placed two models in the top 20.

The bottom line

April 2026 paints a clear picture of Australia’s car market. Electrification is surging, SUVs remain king, and new challengers are shaking up the order. It’s one of the most competitive and diverse car markets Australia has ever seen, with more choice, better tech, and sharper pricing than ever before.
