Tesla Model Y posted its biggest record month yet in Australia while topping the best-selling car list for June 2026. Ranger and HiLux stay at the same #2 and #3, respectively, while Sealion 7 rapidly climbed to the #4 with an impressive 163.5% YoY growth.

The official FCAI report mentioned an even bigger 23.3% market share for EV sales than in May 2026. China emerged as the largest source of vehicles in Australia with a 35.5% share.

Hinting at growing sales of electrified vehicles, FCAI CEO Tony Weber said, “The Australian automotive market has shifted on its axis during the first months of 2026. This year is likely to represent a significant turning point for the Australian automotive industry.”

Key insights for June 2026 car sales

Manufacturers delivered 148,982 new vehicles in June 2026, which is the biggest monthly result since 2017. Fully electric cars took a record 23.3% share of the total market. Tesla shattered its historic sales record with 8,670 total and 8,072 Model Y deliveries.

1. Tesla Model Y is now the car to beat

The Model Y was the best-selling vehicle with 8072 sales Down Under. It beat Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, which means an electric family SUV has now beaten Australia’s favourite utes two months in a row.

2. The “ute always wins” rule is weaker now

The Ford Ranger still had a strong month with 5999 sales, and the Toyota HiLux followed with 5175 sales. But both sat behind the Model Y. Utes are still loved by tradies, families and weekend campers, but they no longer sit at the top of the sales chart.

3. BYD Sealion 7 became the new SUV shock

The BYD Sealion 7 sold 4730 units, which made it the fourth best-selling vehicle overall in June 2026, even pushing ahead of the Toyota RAV4. BYD is not just selling cheap EVs. It now has a serious family SUV that can trouble Toyota.

4. BYD Shark 6 changed the ute conversation

The BYD Shark 6 sold 3398 units and became Australia’s third-best-selling ute in this month by beating the Isuzu D-Max at 2740. Buyers are starting to consider newer alternatives, not just the familiar Ranger, HiLux and D-Max.

5. Small SUVs are becoming a street fight

The Hyundai Kona led the small SUV segment with 2505 sales, but it was closely followed by the BYD Atto 2 with 2482, GWM Haval Jolion with 2446, and Chery Tiggo 4 with 2329. This is good news for everyday buyers. More competition usually means more features, sharper pricing and better value.

6. BYD Atto 2 is moving fast for a new model

The BYD Atto 2 was launched locally in November 2025, and it has already hit 2482 sales in June 2026 and 5401 deliveries year-to-date. Smaller electric SUVs are becoming the main options.

7. Chinese-brand models are now everywhere in the top 10

The top 10 included the BYD Sealion 7, BYD Shark 6, BYD Atto 2, and GWM Haval Jolion. Chinese-made vehicles and Chinese brands were among the biggest winners in June. These cars are now competing in family SUVs, small SUVs and utes.

8. Fuel-saving vehicles are winning

Electric cars hit a record share, while hybrids and plug-in hybrids also grew strongly. Hybrid sales rose 35%, and plug-in hybrids rose 158% year-on-year. Aussies are clearly thinking about running costs, and cheaper fuel bills are becoming a bigger part of the buying decision.

Bottom line

The Tesla Model Y beating Ranger, HiLux and RAV4 is the headline, but the deeper story is bigger: mid-size SUVs are now Australia’s core battleground. Chinese-built SUVs are entering the top ranks in clusters, Hyundai’s SUV pair is punching hard, and traditional utes are still strong but no longer untouchable.

Australia’s best-selling vehicle is now an electric SUV, a result that would have seemed unlikely only a few years ago. May 2026 highlights how quickly the market is changing, with electrification and new challenger brands increasingly shaping the country’s sales charts.
